Fortuna Metals (ASX:FUN): A Top Six Rutile Resource
The investment case for Fortuna Metals (ASX:FUN) has been that it had potential to become a major supplier of rutile from its Mkanda project in Malawi it has now confirmed it, with a maiden inferred MRE placing it top 6 in the world for contained rutile. Rutile is a crucial commodity being the highest-grade titanium mineral & can be processed into titanium metal quicker, cheaper and cleaner than others. And titanium is a key industrial metal used for many purposes including in humanoids. The trouble is that there are so few large, high-grade rutile deposits in production and even fewer in the pipeline, but Mkanda’s maiden MRE provides hope for the industry.
Mkanda is one of the world’s largest rutile resources
The Resource came in at 298Mt @ 0.87% rutile and 1.19% total graphitic content (TGC) at a 0.7% rutile cut-off, equating to 2.59Mt of contained rutile and 3.55Mt of contained graphite. That places Mkanda inside the top six contained rutile deposits globally, a striking outcome for a resource built almost entirely from shallow hand-auger drilling averaging just 8.4m in depth. And the deposit is 20km away from Sovereign’s world-class Kayisa project, Mkanda looks to be the southern continuation of the mineralisation at the Kasiya deposit.
It is all coming together at the right time
The Resource has landed alongside a run of catalysts that have materially de-risked Fortuna, including an A$8.6m cornerstone investment from Silicon Valley-based WNDRCO for a 18.57% stake, and confirmation of a +96% TiO2 rutile product from initial bulk metallurgical test work. With mineralisation open at depth and along strike, and a 5,000m aircore program under way, Fortuna has barely scratched the surface of Mkanda’s potential.
Valuation of $0.21 per share
As Mkanda now has a maiden JORC Resource, we have valued Fortuna at $0.21 per share, or a market cap of $66m, with the latter figure being 25% of Sovereign Metals’ (ASX:SVM) market capitalisation. Although Mkanda’s resource is smaller, we expect Fortuna to re-rate as it grows the Resource in size and confidence, progressed feasibility studies and secures strategic offtake partners.
